On May 21, MUJI signed a “Collaboration Agreement for the Realization of a Sustainable Society through Water” with Kumamoto City, Kumamoto Prefecture.
Kumamoto City is a world-class groundwater city that uses natural groundwater for all of its water supply. Wide-area groundwater conservation efforts that utilize nature have been highly evaluated both in Japan and overseas, and the 4th Asia-Pacific Water Summit is scheduled to be held in April 2022. Ryohin Keikaku sympathized with the city’s groundwater conservation efforts, and the city and Ryohin Keikaku signed an agreement. It is said that they will cooperate with each other with the aim of realizing a sustainable society through water.
Under the agreement, we will promote the use of water dispensers that use tap water to reduce plastic waste and make it a habit for Kumamoto citizens to use their own bottles. In addition, starting from the store, we will interact with the citizens on the content related to water.
Specifically, eight water dispensers will be installed at seven facilities in Kumamoto City by the end of 2021. In addition to supporting on-site classrooms that promote the habituation of my bottles, we will hold walking events and workshops around water sources in the city starting from MUJI stores.
Ryohin Keikaku is promoting various efforts to circulate global resources and reduce waste with the aim of realizing a “comfortable life and society.”
As part of the reduction of plastic waste, a water dispenser was installed in the MUJI store, and a free water supply service and a “water” app that incorporates “water supply” into daily life were launched in July 2020.
We would like to increase opportunities to think about the environment and health together with our customers, taking the opportunity of “water”, a familiar item that is indispensable for living.
In addition, in response to customer requests for more water supply spots in our daily life bases, we started with “water”, including the introduction of water dispensers to other companies and local government bases, in addition to MUJI stores. We have started the initiative.
